Glossary of Leadership Terms

Advisory Board: Group that provides non-binding strategic advice to the management of an organization

Alignment: Process of providing cohesion, clarity, and focus to get all moving in the same direction

Authority: Right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience

Board of Directors: Body of elected or appointed members who jointly govern and oversee the activities of an organization

Burnout: Exhaustion of strength or motivation usually as a result of prolonged stress or frustration

Confirmation Bias: Tendency of people to favor information that confirms their beliefs or hypotheses

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR): Corporate initiative to assess and take responsibility for the company’s effects on environmental and social well-being

Culture (Organizational Culture): Shared assumptions, values, and beliefs that govern how people behave in organizations (i.e., “how we do things here”)

Emotional Intelligence: Ability to perceive, understand, and manage emotions

Ethics: Set of principles of right conduct (i.e., about doing the right thing)

Flow: State of complete absorption with an activity and situation

Followership: Willingness to follow the lead of other people at times regardless of their position

Governance: System of rules, practices, and processes by which an organization is directed and controlled

Groupthink: Phenomenon in which the desire for harmony results in a poor decision

Leadership: Motivating people to work together to accomplish great things (Harvard Kennedy School)

Management: Directing the affairs of an organization through planning, organizing, and controlling resources

Mission Statement: Written declaration of an organization’s core purpose and focus

Onboarding: Process of bringing a new employee on board, usually including orientation and training

Organizational Chart: Diagram of how authority and responsibility are distributed

Planning Fallacy: The tendency to underestimate the time, costs, and risks of future actions and to overestimate the benefits of the same actions (Lovallo and Kahneman)

Power: Control, dominion, or a position of control

Purpose Statement: Description of why an organization exists (its fundamental reason for being)

Social Business: Company designed to address social needs

Social Intelligence: Ability to get along well with others, and to get them to cooperate with you

Stakeholder Theory: A theory which suggests that the purpose of a business is to create as much value as possible for stakeholders

Steward: A person who is responsible for looking after people or resources

Strategy: “Overall plan for deploying resources to establish a favorable position” (Grant)

Succession Planning: Identification and development of potential successors for key positions

Sustainability: Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs; (or, the capacity to endure)

Triple Bottom Line: Framework that incorporates social, environmental, and financial performance (or “people, planet, and profit”)

Triple Crown Leadership: Motivating people to work together to build an excellent, ethical, and enduring organization (B. Vanourek and G. Vanourek)

Values: Things regarded as most important, worthy, or valuable (i.e., what is valued most)

Vision: Aspirational description of what an organization would like to achieve in the mid- or long-term future (i.e., what success looks like)
