Are Leaders Born or Made?

Posted on

Many people believe that leaders are born, not made. We disagree.

Some people may have more natural intelligence, be more outgoing, have innate speaking skills, and so on, and these may be helpful in leadership. But we believe leadership skills can be learned, not necessarily in the old lecture-take-notes model, but through experience, dialogue, role modeling, feedback, coaching, mentoring, and more. If leadership can be learned, then it can be taught.

Leadership is learned, not an innate trait of the gifted few.

What do you think?

Have you developed your leadership capacities over the years? How?

Have you helped to develop the leadership capacities of others? How?

  1. I am a firm believer of the principle that leaders are made, and not born. It takes experience to build character. In fact most positive qualities of a leader often arises from the many negative setbacks that this person triumphantly overcomes.
If we look into the history of many great business leaders, seldom do we see a good leader born with a silver platter on hand. Henry Ford, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Kichido Toyoda etc. all these great men at one point experienced adversities and failures. These experiences shaped their character to become great leaders of their own business empire.
